I Just finished a build with Tobias Shapiro. He decided he wanted to go with high quality American made components. I LOVE IT. Phil, Paul, White…. All great stuff. Though Tobias is a native New Yorker, he now lives in the Midwest and rides actual horses out there. His love for animals and his desire for a classical performance bike led him to our workshop in Brooklyn.

Ben Peck:

A New bike builder on the streets these days, Ben Peck stopped by the shop to hang, chat and drink some beers. He rolled up on one of his new rides, a townie twin top-tube porteur. I’ve gotta say I liked it very much. Ben worked up with Mike Flanagan at the ANT workshop and has been honing his skills back in Brooklyn for a while now. I’ve known Ben for some years now and he is a gem of a person, always willing to lend a hand and kool as a cucumber. He works out of Bike Works in Manhattan and is a top notch mechanic. Street Perp…..! This is a new track frame that hit the streets a few weeks ago. Sometimes things just work out right and the collaboration between rider and builder exceeds expectations, certainly mine. This frame is for a young woman Natalie who wanted something to rip around town on. The color came out great and I’m pleased as pie.

Horse Cycles is supplying ACE Hotel New York with a fleet of bicycles available for guests to either loan or purchase. The steel bikes are made for ripping it up around the streets of New York City. Horse Cycle’s Thomas Callahan designed the fleet for ACE. They are available now either at the hotel or online.

Columbus SL Candy Road

This frame turned out great because of Sam’s vision. Sam wanted something that would look and ride like a classic 80′s steel road frame. Tight road geometry, standard sized tubing and Columbus SL was on the menu. He asked for a Yves Klein blue. We decided to go with a candy color giving the paint depth and a unique commonly reserved for high end vintage cars and trucks or the odd motorcycle. Simple white on blue did the trick. This is one of those instances when builder and customer come together to make something elegant, unexpected and truly unique, a modern take on the traditional Italian road bike. NYC POLO

NYC POLO IS THE JAM! That’s good…. After playing a few times I decided to make a polo vehicle to take some punishment. Working with Doug D and Polo Paul I designed and built up a new set up….. Its so sweet!

Some specs for nerds: True temper tubing including “S” bend seat tube. Disc brakes, Slider dropouts from Paragon Machine works, custom twin plate fork machined in house out of 4130, Same with fork dropouts, tight geometry, drilled out back plate and stiff triple triangle!

I love this game. I wanted to post some pics of the new frame and call all those who are interested and otherwise intimidated to show up to come down and play. My experience in the NYC club has been super positive. Every player has been welcoming and helped push me to improve my game. The players are tops and we always need new talent. Polo pick up games happen Sunday and Thursday in the city on Chrystie and boom. Come by, there is always an extra mallet to use. Thanks to NYC Polo, Doug D and Coach Paul for all the help with this ride.

Jack!

Jack has been working with Horse Cycles for the past 6 months or so. He came on board to learn the process of frame building and lend his skills to the shop. Throughout his time he has helped in the large effort of moving the shop, worked on repairs, assembled build kits and most recently just finished welding up a bar steam combo for his track bike.

Jack recently showed more of a comittment to frame building as he flew out to Oregon to take a frame building class at UBI. He should be back in the next few days and we’re all excited to see what he comes back with. Jack will continue to help out at the shop, honing his skills as a frame builder and working on colaberitive projects with Horse in the future.

Look out for him on the bridges of Manhattan, streets of Brooklyn, and hopefully on the polo courts in china town. A super strong rider with an even stronger passion for the craft, Jack continues to contribute to the Horse Cycles Workshop and to the bike community as a whole.

Here’s a touring frame that just left the shop and sad to see it go. The colors remind me of something you’d see from the 80′s coming out of Japan.

Stainless front and rear dropouts and fork crown…having a seat on the mill. Great Southern light comes through the store front we built and makes for super beauty shots

New shop zone set up. We just started working on bikes again and it feels great. In the next month or so we’ll build out a spray booth and start taking paint jobs from other customers. Swing on by and say hello.
